This year's annual event had 113 attendees with 33 exhibitors from 18 companies. AMTSociety was there exhibiting and also held an Education/IA Refresher Training event the day prior to the con- ference. AMTSociety Executive Director Ronald Donner is an industry member of the ATEC board. For those not familiar with ATEC, its mission is to advocate for aviation maintenance schools in the areas of curriculum improvement, technical and financial support, while promoting mutually beneficial relations with related government and industry groups. During the board of directors and business meetings, three new board members were elected; Tim Guerrero of Redstone College; Andrew Smith of Kansas State University; and Robert Steinman of AIM Texas. Additionally the board selected new officers and congratulations go to President Ryan Goertzen of Spartan School of Aero- nautics; Vice President Amy Kienast of MIAT College of Technology; and Trea- surer Gary Hoyle of Pittsburg School of Aeronautics. Outgoing president Ray Thompson was praised for his superb leadership and he will continue to be actively involved in the organization. Numerous presentations on relevant industry and educational topics were given over the course of the confer- ence from industry leaders, aviation companies and organizations, and air- craft maintenance schools. Jim Sparks, AMTSociety Executive Board member and current chairman of the NBAA Maintenance Committee, gave a com- pelling presentation to the group titled, The 'New' Corporate Aviation Mainte- nance Technician. Sparks highlighted the need for the role of the current A&P; (All-Purpose) mechanic to transition in order to meet the needs of the chang- ing technology in aviation today. One initiative ATEC is closely involved in, and something you will likely hear more about in the near future, is the proposal to implement an Operations Specifica- tion to CFR 14 Part 147 Aviation Main- tenance Schools. To learn more about ATEC visit www.atec-amt.org . Jim Sparks gave a presentation on the need for the role of the mechanic to transition to meet aviation's changing technology needs.
